What can be done for your pets? Green Cleaning does wonders around the home (more DIY for the home coming in future posts), but about those pesky pets. Let's see what we can do.
1. If your dog has a "skunk" odor, give your dog a bath in tomato juice, rinse the coat with undiluted vinegar. Keep vinegar away from your dogs eyes.
2. Do your pets have fleas? Make a "green" flea repellant by boiling sliced lemons in 1 quart of water. Let cool, strain, and poor in spray bottle. Spray pets as necessary.
3. Pet accident odors tend to linger and who wants that? Clean the area thoroughly and allow to dry completely. Then sprinkle on Baking Soda to freshen up that smell you could do without. Let it sit for 15 minutes before vacuuming.
4. Don’t play catch with chemicals. Clean plastic and rubber toys safely by washing in a solution of Baking Soda (4 tablespoons dissolved in 1 quart of warm water). Give furry toys a dry shower by sprinkling Baking Soda on dry toys, and brushing off to thoroughly remove Baking Soda after 15 minutes.
5. You don't want to introduce strange organisms into your aquarium, but you can still go out and collect some stones for the bottom, just be sure to clean the stones thoroughly before adding them into your fish habitat. Clean the stones by scrubbing them with undiluted vinegar. If your rock fizzes up when you apply the vinegar, discard the stone, as it will affect the pH balance of your tank.
6. Most bird and rabbit cages, ferret houses, hamster homes, and the like can be adequately cleaned by wiping them down with a sponge sprinkled with baking soda or dampened with vinegar. Both of these are especially good with urine smells and stains. You might also want to add a thin layer of baking soda on the floor of the cage after cleaning to help control odors.
